Logan Square has always seemed like the less perky neighbor to the left of bustling Bucktown. But traditional Mexican restaurants, stylish bars and an attractive green-space-dotted landscape add up to a neighborhood worth a dedicated trip.

Eating

  1. Vella Cafe

1912 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL
Vella is almost a symbol of the neighborhood: Two friends start selling panini at a market, then crepes from a tiny storefront and now full service breakfast and brunch from their cafe. Good things happen when you invest for the long haul.

  2. Staropolska Restaurant

5249 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL
As far as real-deal restaurants go, this Polish staple nails it on all fronts: convincing old country décor, seasoned wait staff, and food so authentic area Pols consider it home.

  3. Rustik

2515 N California Ave, Chicago, IL
When restaurants talk about the country, they refer to quaint ambiance. This modern restaurant means the coolest damn hunting lodge around equipped with a savvy downtown menu, great cocktails and a sweet patio.

  4. Mi Mexico

3924 W Diversey Ave, Chicago, IL
Taco stands citywide should look to this popular storefront for pointers. Think regional specialties, a clean, convivial space, and about as efficient a kitchen as they come.

Nightlife

  1. The Burlington

3425 W Fullerton Ave, Chicago, IL
This cheeky bar opened as a tribute to old-man bars around town--the cheekiness coming from knowing full well that it would be populated entirely by hip young locals looking for a stylish local drinking option.

  2. The Orbit Room

2959 N California Ave, Chicago, IL
It was a gamble to transform this dusty old corner tavern into a happening bar and grill for the growing young professional community. It paid off big time, in the form of retro styling, updated comfort food and a killer backyard porch.

  3. Mutiny

2428 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL
A dive. A real dive. A beloved local where irony is a meaningless five letter word, and the hard-hitting live rock and punk shows are as they should be--uncomplicated, loud and cheap.

Shopping

  1. For Dog's Sake

1757 N Kimball Ave, Chicago, IL
Pet lovers will swoon over fun beds, collars, leashes and outfits, and hard-core enthusiasts will line-up for the highest quality foods and treats found in city. Perfect for the dog-friendly neighborhood.

  2. Wolfbait & B-Girls

3131 W Logan Blvd, Chicago, IL
This women’s boutique focuses on local designers. But that’s not to say arts-and-crafts stuff. The racks of clothes, accessories and limited home goods compete with the most fashionable downtown stores.
